What will happen when the world ends?
The end of the world can sound frightening and confusing. Scripture lays out the story with surprising clarity, and for those who belong to Jesus, it ends in hope.
Here is the order Become teaches from Scripture: (1) Jesus comes for His people, and believers are caught up (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17). (2) The tribulation, seven years of God’s judgment on the earth (Daniel 9:27; Revelation 6–19). (3) Jesus returns in glory with His people and defeats evil at Armageddon (Revelation 19:11–21). (4) Satan is bound and Jesus reigns on earth for a thousand years (Revelation 20:1–6). (5) A final rebellion, ended by fire from heaven, and Satan is cast into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:7–10). (6) The final judgment at the great white throne (Revelation 20:11–15). (7) A new heaven and a new earth, where God lives with His people forever (Revelation 21–22).

The disciples asked Jesus the same question
Sitting on the Mount of Olives, Jesus’ disciples asked Him privately, “What will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” He told them about wars, famines, earthquakes and false messiahs, and then gave them the most important instruction: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:3, 42).
What happens to the earth
“The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be dissolved in the fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:10). Then God makes everything new: “new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13).
How to live now
Not in fear, and not in speculation, but ready. Peter asks, “Since everything will be dissolved in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness” (2 Peter 3:11).
What the Bible says
- 01
Caught up.
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 - 02
Tribulation and return.
Matthew 24:21, 29–31 - 03
The King returns.
“Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse. And its rider is called Faithful and True. With righteousness He judges and wages war. He has eyes like blazing fire, and many royal crowns on His head. He has a name written on Him that only He Himself knows. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is The Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and pure, follow Him on white horses. And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Revelation 19:11–16 - 04
The reign and the judgment.
“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the Abyss, holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. And he threw him into the Abyss, shut it, and sealed it over him, so that he could not deceive the nations until the thousand years were complete. After that, he must be released for a brief period of time. Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were complete. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection! The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. When the thousand years are complete, Satan will be released from his prison, and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore. And they marched across the broad expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And books were opened, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Revelation 20:1–15 - 05
All things new.
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God. ‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.” And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Then He said, “Write this down, for these words are faithful and true.””
Revelation 21:1–5 - 06
Living ready.
“But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to conduct yourselves in holiness and godliness as you anticipate and hasten the coming of the day of God, when the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with God’s promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”
2 Peter 3:10–13
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Read Matthew 24:36–44. Ask yourself: if Jesus came today, would I be ready?
Common questions
When will the world end?
“No one knows about that day or hour” (Matthew 24:36). Anyone who sets a date is wrong.
Will the earth be destroyed?
The present heavens and earth will be dissolved and renewed into a new heaven and earth (2 Peter 3:10–13; Romans 8:21).
Should I be afraid?
Not if you belong to Jesus. For believers, the end is the beginning of forever with God.
