What will Judgment Day be like? Will it be chaos?

Movies picture the end as screaming crowds running in every direction. But what does Scripture actually describe when every person stands before God?

The short answer

Not chaos: silence and recognition. John saw “a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence… And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne” (Revelation 20:11–12). There is no arguing and no escape. Every person will already know who God is and where they stand. Scripture says “every mouth may be silenced” (Romans 3:19) and that “every knee should bow… and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (Philippians 2:10–11). For those in Hades, judgment won’t be a surprise; they will already know.

Someone who’s been here

A man with nothing to say

Jesus told of a king’s wedding feast where a guest came in without wedding clothes. The king asked him, “Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?” And the man “was speechless” (Matthew 22:11–12). In the presence of the King, excuses disappear.

What happens at the great white throne

The dead are raised and stand before God. Books are opened that record what each person has done, and another book, the book of life. Each is judged according to their deeds. Anyone whose name is not found written in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:12–15).

Why there won’t be chaos

Because there will be no doubt left. Everyone will see God as He is. Those who rejected Him will know exactly why they are there, and they will acknowledge that He is just. The time for arguing ended with their lives.

Where believers are

Believers aren’t judged at the great white throne for their salvation; their names are in the book of life, and their sins were judged at the cross.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The great white throne.

“Then I saw a great white throne and the One seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from His presence, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And books were opened, and one of them was the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their deeds, as recorded in the books. The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades gave up their dead, and each one was judged according to his deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

    Revelation 20:11–15
  2. 02

    Every mouth silenced.

“Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.”

    Romans 3:19
  3. 03

    Every knee will bow.

“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

    Philippians 2:9–11
  4. 04

    Each will give an account.

“It is written: “As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.” So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.”

    Romans 14:11–12
  5. 05

    Speechless.

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless. Then the king told the servants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

    Matthew 22:11–13
  6. 06

    Passed from death to life.

“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.”

    John 5:24

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Make sure your name is in the book of life: trust Jesus today, and tell someone you did.

When is Judgment Day?

The great white throne judgment comes after Jesus’ thousand-year reign (Revelation 20:7–12).
