What are the crowns in heaven, and what are they for?
You may have heard that believers will receive crowns in heaven. What are they, how are they earned, and what’s the point of a crown in a place where everyone is equal before God?
The New Testament names five crowns that Jesus gives His faithful followers as rewards. They are not earned by surviving the tribulation or by any single act; they reward faithfulness in different ways. And their ultimate purpose is worship: in Revelation, the elders “cast their crowns before the throne” and say, “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power” (Revelation 4:10–11). Every reward we receive becomes something to lay at Jesus’ feet.

Paul at the end of his race
Writing from prison near the end of his life, Paul said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7–8).
The five crowns
The crown of life: for those who persevere under trial and stay faithful even to death (James 1:12; Revelation 2:10).
The crown of righteousness: for all who long for Jesus’ return (2 Timothy 4:8).
The crown of glory: for faithful shepherds who lead God’s people well (1 Peter 5:2–4).
The imperishable crown: for those who live disciplined lives for Christ, like an athlete in training (1 Corinthians 9:24–27).
The crown of rejoicing: the people we led to Jesus, who will be our joy before Him (1 Thessalonians 2:19–20).
Why crowns matter
They show that how you live matters to God. Faithfulness in hard times, longing for His return, leading others, self-discipline and sharing your faith will all be honored. And they will all be given back to Him in worship.
What the Bible says
- 01
The crown of life.
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.”
James 1:12 - 02
The crown of righteousness.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who crave His appearing.”
2 Timothy 4:7–8 - 03
The crown of glory.
“Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them not out of compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed, but out of eagerness; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.”
1 Peter 5:2–4 - 04
The imperishable crown.
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to take the prize. Everyone who competes in the games trains with strict discipline. They do it for a crown that is perishable, but we do it for a crown that is imperishable. Therefore I do not run aimlessly; I do not fight like I am beating the air. No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.”
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 - 05
The crown of rejoicing.
“After all, who is our hope, our joy, our crown of boasting, if it is not you yourselves in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming? You are indeed our glory and our joy.”
1 Thessalonians 2:19–20 - 06
Cast before the throne.
“the twenty-four elders fall down before the One seated on the throne, and they worship Him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying: “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things; by Your will they exist and were created.””
Revelation 4:10–11
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Pick one crown above and ask: what would faithfulness in that area look like for me this week?
Common questions
Can I lose a crown?
Jesus said, “Hold fast to what you have, so that no one will take your crown” (Revelation 3:11). Stay faithful.
Are crowns literal?
Scripture describes them as real rewards; whatever their form, their meaning is honor from Jesus, given back to Him in worship.
Do crowns make some people more important in heaven?
Everyone in heaven is there by grace. Rewards differ, but no one will boast; everyone will worship.
