Could sin happen again after the world ends?

It’s a fair question: if Adam and Eve were in a perfect garden and still sinned, what keeps it from happening again in the new heaven and earth? Here is why Scripture says it never will.

The short answer

No. The new creation will never fall, for three reasons. First, the tempter will be gone forever: the devil is thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10). Second, we will be changed: Adam and Eve were innocent but untested; believers will be made like Jesus, glorified and confirmed in righteousness: “we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2). Third, God guarantees it: “nothing unclean will ever enter it” (Revelation 21:27), and “No longer will there be any curse” (Revelation 22:3).

Someone who’s been here

Adam and Eve were innocent, not glorified

In Eden, Adam and Eve were good and innocent, but they had a choice in front of them, a serpent whispering to them, and no history of seeing what sin does. They chose to doubt God (Genesis 3:1–6). Believers in the new creation will be different: we will have seen the cross, been rescued from sin, and been made new from the inside out. We won’t want anything but God.

Why Eden fell

Adam and Eve were created good but not yet made permanent in righteousness. Satan was present to tempt them, and they chose to listen to him (Genesis 3).

Why the new creation won’t

Satan is gone forever (Revelation 20:10). Death and Hades are destroyed (Revelation 20:14). Believers are glorified, with bodies and hearts made like Jesus’ (Philippians 3:21; 1 John 3:2). God dwells with His people directly (Revelation 21:3). The curse is gone (Revelation 22:3).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The tempter removed.

“And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”

    Revelation 20:10
  2. 02

    We will be like Him.

“Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.”

    1 John 3:2
  3. 03

    Nothing unclean enters.

“But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

    Revelation 21:27
  4. 04

    No more curse.

“No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and His servants will worship Him.”

    Revelation 22:3
  5. 05

    Glorified.

“For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified.”

    Romans 8:29–30
  6. 06

    Kept from stumbling.

    Jude 24

Common questions

Will we still be able to choose in heaven?

Yes, but our wills will be fully set on God. We will gladly love Him and never want to turn away.

Could an angel fall again?

Scripture gives no hint of any future rebellion after the final judgment. Evil is ended forever.

Why didn’t God make Adam this way from the start?

Scripture doesn’t fully explain it, but through the fall and redemption we come to know God’s love and grace in a way we never could have otherwise (Ephesians 2:7).
