Where do Christians go when they die before the world ends?

If someone you love died in Christ, you want to know where they are right now. Are they waiting somewhere? Asleep? With God? Here is what Scripture says.

The short answer

Believers who die go immediately to be with the Lord. Paul said he would prefer “to be away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8), and that to depart and be with Christ is “far better” (Philippians 1:23). Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). They are conscious, comforted and with Jesus. What they are waiting for is not God; it is their resurrection bodies, which they receive when Jesus returns.

Someone who’s been here

Stephen saw where he was going

As Stephen was being stoned for his faith, he looked up and said, “Look, I see the heavens open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” His last words were, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:55–59). He didn’t expect to sleep in a waiting room. He expected to go straight to Jesus.

What it’s like now

Scripture gives glimpses: believers are with Christ, at rest from their labor (Revelation 14:13), comforted (Luke 16:25), and worshiping before God’s throne (Revelation 7:9–10). It is “far better” than anything here.

What they are waiting for

When Jesus returns, “the dead in Christ will be the first to rise” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Their bodies will be raised and reunited with their souls, glorious and imperishable. Then all believers will live forever with God in the new heaven and new earth.

And unbelievers?

Those who die without Christ go to Hades, a holding place of torment, to await the final judgment (Luke 16:23).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    At home with the Lord.

“Therefore we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”

    2 Corinthians 5:6–8
  2. 02

    Far better.

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. So what shall I choose? I do not know. I am torn between the two. I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better indeed.”

    Philippians 1:21–23
  3. 03

    Today in Paradise.

“And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.””

    Luke 23:43
  4. 04

    Receive my spirit.

“But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him. They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.””

    Acts 7:55–59
  5. 05

    Rest from their labor.

“And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write, “Blessed are the dead—those who die in the Lord from this moment on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them.””

    Revelation 14:13
  6. 06

    Grieve with hope.

“Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.”

    1 Thessalonians 4:13–14

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

If you are grieving a believer, read 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 out loud and thank God for where they are right now.

Common questions

Is “soul sleep” biblical?

Scripture sometimes calls death “sleep” for believers because it is temporary, but it describes believers as conscious and with the Lord after death (Luke 23:43; Philippians 1:23).

Can people in heaven see us?

Scripture doesn’t say clearly. Hebrews 12:1 speaks of a great cloud of witnesses, but the focus of heaven is Jesus.

Do we become angels?

No. People remain people, and will receive resurrected human bodies.
