Will we recognize our family in heaven?

If you’ve lost someone you love, this may be the question you want answered most. Will I see them again? Will they know me? Will I know them?

The short answer

Yes. Believers will recognize and know each other in heaven. Paul comforted grieving Christians by saying they will be “caught up together with them” to be with the Lord (1 Thessalonians 4:17). David said of his son who died, “I will go to him” (2 Samuel 12:23). At the transfiguration, Peter recognized Moses and Elijah without being introduced (Matthew 17:3–4). Relationships won’t be erased; they will be made perfect, without sin, misunderstanding or goodbye.

Someone who’s been here

Peter knew who they were

Jesus took Peter, James and John up a mountain, and His appearance was transformed. Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Him, men who had lived hundreds of years earlier. Peter immediately said, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” (Matthew 17:1–4). No one had to tell him who they were. In God’s presence, we will know.

What Scripture shows

People keep their identity after death: the rich man recognized Abraham and Lazarus, and remembered his brothers (Luke 16:23–28). Jesus said many will sit at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom (Matthew 8:11). Jesus Himself was recognized after His resurrection.

What will be different

Marriage as we know it won’t continue (Matthew 22:30), but love will be deeper, not weaker. Every relationship will be healed and whole.

What if someone I love isn’t there?

That is one of the hardest questions there is. Scripture promises that God will wipe every tear from our eyes (Revelation 21:4), and that we will fully trust His justice and love. For those still living, it’s a reason to share Jesus with them now.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Together with them.

“Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him. By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

    1 Thessalonians 4:13–18
  2. 02

    I will go to him.

“But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.””

    2 Samuel 12:23
  3. 03

    Moses and Elijah recognized.

“After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared before them, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.””

    Matthew 17:1–4
  4. 04

    At the table with Abraham.

“I say to you that many will come from the east and the west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.”

    Matthew 8:11
  5. 05

    Then I shall know fully.

“Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

    1 Corinthians 13:12
  6. 06

    Every tear wiped away.

“‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,’ and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away.””

    Revelation 21:4

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

If you’re grieving a believer, write a short letter to God thanking Him that you will see them again, and read 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18.

Common questions

Will we know people we never met?

Peter knew Moses and Elijah without an introduction. In heaven, “I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Will babies we lost be there?

We believe babies and young children who die go to be with the Lord (2 Samuel 12:23).

Will my pets be there?

Scripture doesn’t say. It does picture animals in the restored creation (Isaiah 11:6–9).
