Bible verses for hard times
If you searched this, something is heavy right now. Maybe it came all at once, or maybe it has been wearing you down for a long time. You are not weak for feeling it, and you are not alone in it.
The Bible never promises that hard times won’t come. Jesus said plainly, “In the world you will have tribulation” (John 16:33). What it promises is that God does not leave you in them: He is close to the brokenhearted, He gives strength for today, and He is able to bring good out of what hurt you.

Jesus knew this night too
The night before the cross, Jesus told His closest friends, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death” (Mark 14:34). He didn’t hide it. He asked them to stay near Him, He fell to the ground and prayed honestly, and an angel came and strengthened Him (Luke 22:43). He didn’t skip the hard night. He was carried through it, and you can be too.
What the Bible actually promises
Faith is not a shield that keeps every storm away. Joseph was sold by his brothers. David hid in caves. Paul was shipwrecked and beaten. Jesus Himself wept at a friend’s grave. Hard times are not proof that God has left you.
What runs through every one of those stories is presence: God was with them in it, and He was working while it still looked like nothing was changing.
It’s okay to be honest with God
About a third of the Psalms are laments: prayers that say, in effect, “God, where are You?” They are in the Bible on purpose. You don’t have to clean up your words before you pray. Tell Him exactly how it is.
What the Bible says

When you are afraid of what comes next.

When your heart is broken.
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.”

When you are exhausted.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 - 04
When you are pressed on every side but not finished.
“We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”

Romans 8:28 - 08
When you have nothing left in you.
“But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 - 09
When worry won’t let you sleep.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7 - 10
When the world feels like it’s winning.
“I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!””

Common questions
Does God cause hard times?
The Bible shows a broken world where loss, sickness and other people’s choices cause real pain, and it never calls those things good. What it does say is that God can work through them, and that He is with you while you go through them (Romans 8:28; Isaiah 43:2).
Why does God feel silent when I need Him most?
Many of the people God used most felt the same: David asked, “How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever?” (Psalm 13:1). Silence is not absence. Keep talking to Him, keep reading, and let other believers pray with you while you wait.
Is it wrong to be angry at God?
Bringing your anger to God is a form of trust. Job, David and Jeremiah all did. What hurts us is walking away from Him, not being honest with Him.
What is the best Bible verse for hard times?
The verse read most around the world in recent years is Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you.” Start there.
