What does the Bible say about depression?
Maybe you can’t remember the last time you felt like yourself. Getting out of bed takes everything you have, and church people telling you to just “choose joy” hasn’t helped. God has not left you here.
Depression is not a sin, and it doesn’t mean you’re a bad Christian. Some of God’s strongest servants went through it: Elijah asked God to take his life, David wrote psalms from the bottom of the pit, and Jesus Himself said His soul was “consumed with sorrow to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38). God doesn’t shame people in the dark. He comes close: “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18). Bring it to Him honestly, let people help you, and get care from a doctor or counselor. Elijah under the broom tree
Right after his greatest victory, Elijah ran for his life, sat under a bush in the desert, and prayed to die: “I have had enough, LORD. Take my life.” Then he fell asleep. God didn’t lecture him. He sent an angel who touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” There was bread and water. Elijah slept again, and the angel came back a second time with more food (1 Kings 19:4–8). Only after he had rested and eaten did God speak to him, in a still, small voice.
What God did for Elijah
He let him sleep. He fed him. He spoke to him gently. He gave him a next step and a friend, Elisha (1 Kings 19:15–21). In plain words: God cared for Elijah’s body, his soul and his loneliness, all three. That is still how healing usually comes.
The prayers of people in the dark
The Psalms give you words when you have none: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? … Put your hope in God” (Psalm 42:5). Psalm 88 ends without a happy ending at all, and God still put it in the Bible. You are allowed to be honest with Him.
Real steps
1. Tell one person the truth about how you’re doing.
2. See a doctor. Depression can have physical causes, and treatment is a gift from God, not a failure of faith.
3. Keep the basics: sleep, food, sunlight, a short walk.
4. Read one psalm a day, even if you feel nothing.
5. Don’t isolate. Elijah thought he was the only one left (1 Kings 19:10). He wasn’t, and neither are you.
What the Bible says
- 01
Near to the brokenhearted.
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 - 02
Elijah under the tree.
“And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” And he looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. A second time the angel of the LORD returned and touched him, saying, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.”
1 Kings 19:3–8 - 03
Put your hope in God.
“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him for the salvation of His presence.”
Psalm 42:5 - 04
Jesus’ sorrow.
“Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me.””
Matthew 26:38 - 05
Rest for your soul.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.””
Matthew 11:28–30 - 06
Beauty for ashes.
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of our God’s vengeance, to comfort all who mourn, to console the mourners in Zion— to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”
Isaiah 61:1–3

Common questions
Can a Christian be depressed?
Yes. Faithful people in the Bible were. Depression is something you go through, not a verdict on your faith.
Is taking antidepressants a lack of faith?
No. God works through medicine and doctors. Pray, and take the help He provides.
Is depression a demon?
Usually no. Depression has many causes: grief, stress, body chemistry, trauma. A Christian cannot be possessed. Pray, and also get care.
