What does the Bible say about being thankful?
It’s easy to be thankful when life is good. But what about when you’re struggling? Does God really expect thanks then too?
Yes. God calls His people to be thankful in every season: “Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Notice it says in every circumstance, not for every circumstance. You don’t have to thank God for the pain. You thank Him in it, for who He is, what He has already done, and what He has promised. Gratitude doesn’t deny the hard thing. It just refuses to let the hard thing be the only thing you see.

Only one came back
Ten men with leprosy called out to Jesus from a distance, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” He told them to go show themselves to the priests, and on the way, all ten were healed. One of them, a Samaritan, turned back, praising God in a loud voice, and fell at Jesus’ feet to thank Him. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where then are the other nine?” (Luke 17:11–19). All ten got the miracle. Only one came back to say thank you.
What gratitude does
It turns your eyes back to God. It guards your heart from envy and bitterness. It opens the door to peace: thanksgiving is right in the middle of Philippians 4:6–7. And it reminds you that every good gift comes from Him (James 1:17).
Simple ways to practice it
Write down three things you’re thankful for every night. Thank God before you ask Him for anything. Tell someone why you’re grateful for them. Start your prayers the way Psalm 100 does: enter His gates with thanksgiving.
What the Bible says
- 01
Give thanks in every circumstance.
“Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 - 02
The one who came back.
“While Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, He was passing between Samaria and Galilee. As He entered one of the villages, He was met by ten lepers. They stood at a distance and raised their voices, shouting, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When Jesus saw them, He said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they were on their way, they were cleansed. When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice. He fell facedown at Jesus’ feet in thanksgiving to Him—and he was a Samaritan. “Were not all ten cleansed?” Jesus asked. “Where then are the other nine? Was no one found except this foreigner to return and give glory to God?” Then Jesus said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well! ””
Luke 17:11–19 - 03
Enter His gates with thanksgiving.
“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and bless His name. For the LORD is good, and His loving devotion endures forever; His faithfulness continues to all generations.”
Psalm 100:4–5 - 04
With thanksgiving.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7 - 05
Be thankful.
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
Colossians 3:15–17 - 06
Every good gift.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.”
James 1:17
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
