What does the Bible say about hope?

You’re trying to hold on, but it’s getting harder to believe anything will change. You need more than “it’ll get better.” You need something real.

The short answer

Biblical hope is not wishful thinking. It is confident expectation built on who God is and what He has promised. It is anchored in something that already happened: Jesus rose from the dead, and because He lives, God’s promises are certain (1 Peter 1:3). “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19). Hope isn’t pretending your situation is fine. It’s knowing your story isn’t finished, because God isn’t finished.

Naomi said, “Call me bitter”

Naomi lost her husband and both her sons in a foreign land. She came home empty and told the women of Bethlehem, “Do not call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has dealt quite bitterly with me” (Ruth 1:20). But her daughter-in-law Ruth stayed with her, married Boaz, and gave birth to a son. The women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer.” That baby, Obed, became the grandfather of King David (Ruth 4:14–17). The woman who called herself bitter held the next chapter of God’s story in her arms.

Where hope comes from

God’s character: He cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18). His promises: He is working all things for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). The resurrection: death is not the end (1 Corinthians 15:20). His presence: He is with you in it (Isaiah 43:2).

How to hold on to hope

Read the promises out loud. Remember what God has already done. Stay close to people who hope. Pray honestly, even “I have no hope left.” And look ahead: the best is still to come (Revelation 21:4).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    The God of hope.

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

    Romans 15:13
  2. 02

    An anchor for the soul.

“Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be strongly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,”

    Hebrews 6:18–19
  3. 03

    A future and a hope.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.”

    Jeremiah 29:11
  4. 04

    His mercies are new.

“Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”

    Lamentations 3:21–23
  5. 05

    A living hope.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,”

    1 Peter 1:3
  6. 06

    Naomi’s grandson.

“So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And when he had relations with her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a kinsman-redeemer. May his name become famous in Israel. He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.” And Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and became a nurse to him. The neighbor women said, “A son has been born to Naomi,” and they named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse, the father of David.”

    Ruth 4:13–17

Common questions

What is the difference between hope and faith?

Faith trusts God now; hope looks forward to what He has promised. They work together (Hebrews 11:1).

Can a Christian feel hopeless?

Yes, for a season. Bring it to God and to people who can help carry it.

Is Jeremiah 29:11 for me?

It was spoken to Israel in exile, but it shows God’s heart for His people: even in hard seasons, He has a future for them.

Know someone asking this?

Send it to them, put it on your Story, or save it to come back to.

You don’t have to carry this alone tonight.
