What does the Bible say about rest and burnout?
You’re tired in a way sleep doesn’t fix. You keep going because people need you, but you’re running on empty and you know it.
God designed you to need rest, and He doesn’t see it as weakness. He rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2–3), He made rest a rhythm for His people, and Jesus took His exhausted disciples away from the crowds: “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while” (Mark 6:31). The deepest rest is in Jesus Himself: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Burnout often comes from carrying what God never asked you to carry alone.

Moses’ father-in-law stepped in
Moses was judging every dispute for the entire nation of Israel, from morning until evening, by himself. His father-in-law Jethro watched and said, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people with you will surely wear yourselves out, for the task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone” (Exodus 18:17–18). He told Moses to choose capable people and share the load. Moses listened, and it saved him and the people.
Signs you need rest
Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t touch. Irritability with the people you love. Losing joy in things that used to give you life. Prayer that feels like another task. Getting sick often.
How to rest God’s way
1. Take one day a week to stop working and enjoy God.
2. Sleep. “He gives sleep to His beloved” (Psalm 127:2).
3. Share the load, like Moses did. Delegate and ask for help.
4. Say no to what God hasn’t assigned you.
5. Get alone with God daily, even for ten minutes.
6. If burnout has turned into depression, get help from a doctor or counselor.
What the Bible says
- 01
I will give you rest.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.””
Matthew 11:28–30 - 02
Rest for a while.
“Meanwhile, the apostles gathered around Jesus and brought Him news of all they had done and taught. And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So they went away in a boat by themselves to a solitary place.”
Mark 6:30–32 - 03
Too heavy for you.
“The next day Moses took his seat to judge the people, and they stood around him from morning until evening. When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone as judge, with all the people standing around you from morning till evening?” “Because the people come to me to inquire of God,” Moses replied. “Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me to judge between one man and another, and I make known to them the statutes and laws of God.” But Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. Surely you and these people with you will wear yourselves out, because the task is too heavy for you. You cannot handle it alone. Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their causes to Him. Teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way to live and the work they must do. Furthermore, select capable men from among the people—God-fearing, trustworthy men who are averse to dishonest gain. Appoint them over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. Have these men judge the people at all times. Then they can bring you any major issue, but all minor cases they can judge on their own, so that your load may be lightened as they share it with you. If you follow this advice and God so directs you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people can go home in peace.””
Exodus 18:13–23 - 04
He makes me lie down.
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.”
Psalm 23:1–3 - 05
He gives sleep.
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat— for He gives sleep to His beloved.”
Psalm 127:2 - 06
Strength for the weary.
“He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:29–31

Common questions
Is it lazy to rest?
No. God rested and commanded rest. Laziness avoids work; rest restores you for it.
Is it a sin to be burned out?
No. It’s a signal, not a sin. Listen to it.
How do I rest when I have kids or two jobs?
Start small: protected sleep, ten minutes alone with God, and asking for help. Rest grows from small habits.
