“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.”
In plain words: The Lord takes care of me the way a shepherd takes care of his sheep, so I lack nothing I truly need. He gives me rest, leads me to calm and peaceful places, renews my strength, and guides me in the right way because that is who He is.
What Psalm 23:1-3 means.
David, a shepherd himself, pictures God as the shepherd who leads, feeds and restores. A sheep with a good shepherd has no reason to panic.
Common questions about Psalm 23:1-3
Does 'I shall not want' mean I will get everything I want?
No. David is not promising that every wish will come true. He is saying that with the Lord as his shepherd, he does not lack what he truly needs. Think of a sheep. It cannot find safe food, water or shelter by itself, but a good shepherd gives all three. David trusts that God knows what we need and cares for us. Later in the same psalm, David walks through a dark valley, so this is not a promise of an easy life. It is a promise that we are not alone. See [[Psalm 23:4]].
Apply it today: Name one thing you are worried about needing, and tell God about it in a short, honest prayer.
Why is God called a shepherd?
In David's day, a shepherd lived with his sheep day and night. He found them grass and water, guarded them from wild animals, and went after any sheep that wandered off. David did this work himself, so he knew how helpless sheep are and how much a good shepherd matters. He uses that picture to say that God leads us, feeds us and protects us. Jesus later called Himself the good shepherd, who gives His life for His sheep. See [[John 10:11]].
Apply it today: Thank God for one way He has cared for you or guided you this week.
What does it mean that He restores my soul?
Your soul is the deep inside of you, your heart, your mind and your whole self. When life wears you out, you can feel empty and tired in that deep place. David says God brings it back to life, like a tired sheep resting in green grass beside calm water. He also guides us on right paths, which means the good way to live. He does this for the sake of His name, because it is who He is. Healing can take time, and a good shepherd is patient.
