Common questions about Proverbs 3:24

Does this mean I'll never be afraid or have trouble sleeping?

Not exactly. Proverbs is full of wise sayings about how life goes when we live God's way. It is not a promise that every night will be easy. Pain, grief, worry and sickness can keep anyone awake, and that does not mean your trust in God is weak. The verse points to a deeper kind of rest: God is near and can be trusted. If sleep troubles last, talking with a doctor is also a wise and good step.

Apply it today: Notice one thing that keeps you up at night, and write it down so you can bring it to God and, if needed, to a doctor.

Why does this verse connect wisdom with sleep?

The verse sits inside a longer passage. Just before it, the writer says to hold on to wisdom, which means good sense about how to live. Then he says you will not need to fear sudden trouble, because the Lord is your confidence. So the sleep is not magic. It grows from a clear mind and a trusting heart, knowing you are not holding up the whole world alone. [[Proverbs 3:21-26]]

Apply it today: Read Proverbs 3:21-26 slowly tonight before you turn out the light.

How can I rest when I'm afraid?

Fear is real, and the Bible does not scold people for it. Jesus invites people who are worn out and weighed down to come to Him and find rest. A psalm also shows a person who lies down in peace because God keeps him safe. Rest starts by telling God what scares you, then trusting that He stays awake and in charge when you cannot. Apply it today: Pray a short prayer tonight, naming your biggest worry and asking God to carry it while you sleep.
