What is the mark of the beast?
The mark of the beast gets talked about with every new technology, from barcodes to vaccines to microchips. It’s worth knowing exactly what the Bible says, so you can neither panic nor ignore it.
The mark of the beast is a mark on the right hand or forehead that a coming world ruler will require during the tribulation; without it, no one will be able to buy or sell (Revelation 13:16–17). It is tied to the beast’s name or number, 666 (Revelation 13:18). Taking it is not an accident: it is a deliberate choice to worship the beast, and God warns that whoever takes it will drink the wine of His wrath (Revelation 14:9–11). It is not something a believer can take by mistake today.

Three young men wouldn’t bow
King Nebuchadnezzar set up a giant golden statue and ordered everyone to bow when the music played, or be thrown into a blazing furnace. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused: “But even if He does not… we will not serve your gods” (Daniel 3:18). They were thrown in, and a fourth figure walked with them in the fire. The mark of the beast will be the same kind of choice: worship the ruler, or stay faithful whatever it costs.
What refusing it will cost
Those who refuse the mark won’t be able to buy food, work or trade (Revelation 13:17). Many will be hunted and killed: John saw “the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark” (Revelation 20:4).
What they receive
The same verse continues: “And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4). What they lose on earth is nothing compared with what they gain. Jesus said, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul” (Matthew 10:28).
Is it here now?
No. The mark comes during the tribulation, under the beast, and it requires worshiping him. A barcode, a vaccine or a payment chip today is not the mark. Don’t live in fear of technology; live faithful to Jesus.
What the Bible says
- 01
The mark and the number.
“And the second beast required all people, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark—the name of the beast or the number of its name. Here is a call for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and that number is 666.”
Revelation 13:16–18 - 02
The warning.
“And a third angel followed them, calling out in a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on his forehead or on his hand, he too will drink the wine of God’s anger, poured undiluted into the cup of His wrath. And he will be tormented in fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.””
Revelation 14:9–11 - 03
Those who refused.
“Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”
Revelation 20:4 - 04
Fear God, not man.
“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Matthew 10:28 - 05
We will not bow.
“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If the God whom we serve exists, then He is able to deliver us from the blazing fiery furnace and from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.””
Daniel 3:16–18 - 06
Victorious over the beast.
“And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, beside which stood those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name. They were holding harps from God,”
Revelation 15:2
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Read Daniel 3. Ask God for the kind of faith that doesn’t bow, in the small choices you face this week.
Common questions
What does 666 mean?
Revelation says it is “the number of a man” (Revelation 13:18). Six falls short of seven, the number of completeness, and many see it as humanity claiming to be God and falling short.
Can a Christian take the mark by accident?
No. It requires a deliberate choice to worship the beast during the tribulation.
If someone takes the mark, can they be saved?
Scripture presents taking the mark as a final choice: those who worship the beast and receive his mark face God’s wrath (Revelation 14:9–11).
