Can a Christian be demon-possessed?
Maybe you’ve had experiences you can’t explain, or a heaviness that won’t lift, or someone told you something frightening. Fear about the spiritual world can be overwhelming. Let’s look at it calmly.
No. A Christian cannot be possessed, owned and controlled, by a demon, because the Holy Spirit lives in them and they belong to Christ (1 Corinthians 6:19–20; 1 John 4:4). A temple the Holy Spirit lives in is not available to anything else. Believers can, however, face real spiritual attack, temptation and pressure from outside, which is why Scripture tells us to put on the armor of God and resist the devil (Ephesians 6:10–18; James 4:7). Jesus has authority over every power, and in Him you do too.

A man no one could help
In the region of the Gerasenes lived a man so tormented that he lived among the tombs, cutting himself, and no chain could hold him. When Jesus stepped off the boat, the darkness that had controlled the man fell at His feet. One word from Jesus, and the town found the man sitting, dressed and in his right mind (Mark 5:1–15). Nothing that frightens you is stronger than Him.
Possession and attack are different
Possession means being owned and controlled. The Bible describes believers as owned by God, sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13–14). Attack means pressure from outside: lies, temptation, fear and accusation. Every believer faces attack, and every believer has been given what they need to stand.
When to get help
Some experiences that feel spiritual also have physical or mental-health causes: sleep paralysis, panic attacks, trauma or other conditions. Seeking medical help is not a lack of faith. Pray, and get wise people around you: a pastor you trust and, when needed, a doctor.
What the Bible says
- 01
Greater is He who is in you.
“You, little children, are from God and have overcome them, because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”
1 John 4:4 - 02
Resist, and he will flee.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 - 03
The armor of God.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints.”
Ephesians 6:10–18 - 04
Jesus has already disarmed them.
“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
Colossians 2:15 - 05
Not a spirit of fear.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
2 Timothy 1:7 - 06
Authority in His name.
“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you.”
Luke 10:19
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Pray out loud tonight: “Jesus, I belong to You. Your Spirit lives in me. In Your name I reject fear and every lie of the enemy.” Then read Ephesians 6:10–18.
Common questions
How do I know if I’m under spiritual attack?
Common signs are persistent lies about who you are, fear that comes from nowhere, and pressure to pull away from God and people. The response is the same: pray, stay in Scripture, stay connected to believers, and resist.
Can my house or family be cursed?
Scripture says a curse without cause does not land (Proverbs 26:2), and that Christ has redeemed us from the curse (Galatians 3:13). Pray over your home and family in Jesus’ name.
Should I be afraid of demons?
No. Respect the reality of spiritual battle, but don’t fear it. Jesus has already won (Colossians 2:15).
You don’t have to carry this alone tonight.
