What does the Bible say about angels?
Maybe you’ve felt protected in a moment that should have gone wrong. Maybe you just wonder what angels really are, beyond the greeting cards.
Angels are real, powerful spirit beings created by God to worship Him and carry out His work. “Are not the angels ministering spirits sent out to serve those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14). They protect God’s people (Psalm 91:11), deliver messages, and fight spiritual battles (Daniel 10:13). Angels are not dead people, and we never pray to them or worship them. When John fell at an angel’s feet, the angel said, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you… Worship God!” (Revelation 22:9).

The hills were full of chariots of fire
An enemy army surrounded the city where the prophet Elisha was staying. His servant woke up, saw horses and chariots everywhere, and panicked: “Oh, my master, what are we to do?” Elisha said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then he prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the servant saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2 Kings 6:15–17).
What angels do
Worship God around His throne (Isaiah 6:2–3; Revelation 5:11). Bring messages: Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:26–38). Protect and rescue: an angel opened Peter’s prison doors (Acts 12:7–10). Fight: Michael the archangel against the dragon (Revelation 12:7). Rejoice when one sinner repents (Luke 15:10).
Guardian angels
“For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:11). Jesus said of children, “their angels in heaven always see the face of My Father” (Matthew 18:10). Scripture shows angels watching over believers. It doesn’t say exactly how many or whether each person has one assigned.
What angels are not
They are not people who died. They do not get their wings. They do not want our worship. And Satan can disguise himself “as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14), so any “angel” who brings a different message than the gospel is not from God (Galatians 1:8).
What the Bible says
- 01
Ministering spirits.
“Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Hebrews 1:14 - 02
Guarding you.
“For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
Psalm 91:11–12 - 03
Chariots of fire.
“When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning, behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?” “Do not be afraid,” Elisha answered, “for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
2 Kings 6:15–17 - 04
Peter rescued.
“On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, with sentries standing guard at the entrance to the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his wrists. “Get dressed and put on your sandals,” said the angel. Peter did so, and the angel told him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” So Peter followed him out, but he was unaware that what the angel was doing was real. He thought he was only seeing a vision. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city, which opened for them by itself. When they had gone outside and walked the length of one block, the angel suddenly left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating.””
Acts 12:6–11 - 05
Worship God.
“And I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. But he said to me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!””
Revelation 22:8–9 - 06
Strangers.
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.”
Hebrews 13:2
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.
Read 2 Kings 6:8–23 today. Then pray Elisha’s prayer over whatever is surrounding you: “LORD, open my eyes.”
Common questions
Do people become angels when they die?
No. Angels are a separate creation. Believers who die are with the Lord as themselves.
Can I talk to my guardian angel?
Scripture never tells us to pray to angels. Pray to God, who commands them.
Are angels male or female?
They usually appear as men in Scripture, and Jesus said they do not marry (Matthew 22:30).
