Will God and Satan fight? Will there be a war?
Many people imagine good and evil as two equal forces locked in an endless battle. The Bible tells a very different story, and it ends with a clear winner.
Yes, Scripture describes war, but never a fair fight. Satan is a created angel, not God’s equal. Revelation describes three moments: a war in heaven where Satan is thrown down to earth (Revelation 12:7–9); the battle of Armageddon, where Jesus returns and defeats the armies gathered against Him by the word of His mouth (Revelation 16:16; 19:11–21); and a final rebellion after the thousand years, ended instantly by fire from heaven, after which the devil is thrown into the lake of fire forever (Revelation 20:7–10).

A shepherd boy and a giant
Goliath was nine feet tall and terrified Israel’s whole army for forty days. Then a teenage shepherd named David walked out with a sling and said, “The battle belongs to the LORD.” One stone, and the giant fell (1 Samuel 17:45–50). The final battle will be even more one-sided: the enemy gathers every army on earth, and Jesus ends it with a word.
The war in heaven
“Then war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But the dragon was not strong enough, and no longer was any place found in heaven for him and his angels” (Revelation 12:7–8).
Armageddon
The beast gathers the kings of the earth at a place called Armageddon (Revelation 16:16). Jesus returns on a white horse, called Faithful and True, with the armies of heaven. The beast and false prophet are captured and thrown alive into the lake of fire, and the armies are defeated by the sword from His mouth (Revelation 19:11–21). There is no long battle.
The final rebellion
After Jesus’ thousand-year reign, Satan is released for a short time, deceives the nations once more and surrounds God’s people. Fire comes down from heaven and consumes them, and the devil is thrown into the lake of fire, to be tormented forever (Revelation 20:7–10). Evil never rises again.
What the Bible says
- 01
War in heaven.
“Then a war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But the dragon was not strong enough, and no longer was any place found in heaven for him and his angels. And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”
Revelation 12:7–9 - 02
Armageddon.
“And they assembled the kings in the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”
Revelation 16:16 - 03
The rider on the white horse.
“Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse. And its rider is called Faithful and True. With righteousness He judges and wages war. He has eyes like blazing fire, and many royal crowns on His head. He has a name written on Him that only He Himself knows. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is The Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and pure, follow Him on white horses. And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out in a loud voice to all the birds flying overhead, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings and commanders and mighty men, of horses and riders, of everyone slave and free, small and great.” Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies assembled to wage war against the One seated on the horse, and against His army. But the beast was captured along with the false prophet, who on its behalf had performed signs deceiving those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. And the rest were killed with the sword that proceeded from the mouth of the One seated on the horse. And all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.”
Revelation 19:11–21 - 04
Satan’s final end.
“When the thousand years are complete, Satan will be released from his prison, and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—to assemble them for battle. Their number is like the sand of the seashore. And they marched across the broad expanse of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them. And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, into which the beast and the false prophet had already been thrown. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
Revelation 20:7–10 - 05
Already defeated at the cross.
“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
Colossians 2:15 - 06
To destroy the devil’s works.
“The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.”
1 John 3:8
Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

Common questions
Is Satan God’s equal opposite?
No. Satan is a created being. God has no equal (Isaiah 46:9).
Where is Armageddon?
The name likely refers to Har Megiddo, the hill of Megiddo in northern Israel, the site of many ancient battles.
Has Satan already lost?
Yes. Jesus disarmed him at the cross (Colossians 2:15). The final battles carry out a verdict already won.
