Where did Satan come from?

It’s a great question. Genesis starts with God creating everything and with Adam and Eve, yet a serpent is already in the garden, ready to deceive them. So when did Satan rebel, and wasn’t sin already here?

The short answer

Satan was created good, as a powerful angel, before Adam and Eve. God made the angels before He made the earth; they shouted for joy when He laid its foundations (Job 38:4–7). One of them grew proud, rebelled against God, and was cast down, taking other angels with him. So sin began with Satan, in the angelic realm, before humanity existed. When Adam and Eve chose to listen to him instead of God, sin entered the human world: “sin entered the world through one man” (Romans 5:12).

Someone who’s been here

Jesus saw it happen

When Jesus’ disciples came back amazed that even demons obeyed them in His name, He said something remarkable: “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven” (Luke 10:18). The Son of God existed before creation (John 1:1–3). He wasn’t repeating a legend; He was describing what He witnessed. And He immediately told them not to rejoice that spirits submit to them, but that their names are written in heaven.

Satan was created good

God created everything good, including the angels. Scripture describes a guardian cherub who was “blameless in your ways from the day you were created, until wickedness was found in you” (Ezekiel 28:15). That passage is addressed to the king of Tyre, but it describes someone who was in Eden and on God’s holy mountain, and has long been understood to reveal the power behind that king.

Pride was the first sin

Isaiah 14 describes a shining one who said in his heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God… I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:13–14). Paul warns leaders against conceit so they won’t “fall into the same condemnation as the devil” (1 Timothy 3:6). Satan’s sin was wanting to be God.

So was sin already here?

Yes, in the spiritual realm. Satan and the angels who followed him had already rebelled. But the earth and humanity were still unspoiled until Adam and Eve chose to disobey. That is why Scripture calls Satan “that ancient serpent” (Revelation 12:9) and why the human story of sin begins in Genesis 3. Satan brought the temptation; Adam and Eve made the choice.

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    Angels before the earth.

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstone, while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”

    Job 38:4–7
  2. 02

    Created blameless.

“From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways— until wickedness was found in you.”

    Ezekiel 28:15
  3. 03

    The pride that fell.

“How you have fallen from heaven, O day star, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations. You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.””

    Isaiah 14:12–14
  4. 04

    Like lightning from heaven.

“So He told them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

    Luke 10:18
  5. 05

    That ancient serpent.

“And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”

    Revelation 12:9
  6. 06

    How sin entered the world.

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned.”

    Romans 5:12

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

Read Genesis 3 and then Revelation 12:7–11. One shows where the fight began; the other shows how it ends.

Common questions

Why did God create Satan if He knew he would fall?

God created angels, like people, with real freedom to love and obey Him. Love that can’t say no isn’t love. God also knew He would defeat evil completely through Jesus.

Is Lucifer Satan?

“Lucifer” comes from the Latin for “morning star” in Isaiah 14:12. It has long been used as a name for Satan before his fall.

When did Satan fall?

Scripture doesn’t give a date, but it was before he tempted Eve in the garden, so after the angels were created and before the fall of humanity.
