Common questions about Daniel 3:17-18

Who were these three men, and why were they facing a furnace?

They were Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, young Jewish men living far from home in Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar built a huge gold statue and ordered everyone to bow to it when the music played. Anyone who refused would be thrown into a blazing furnace. These three served the one true God, so they would not bow to anything else. They told the king this to his face, even though it could cost them their lives. You can read how the story begins in [[Daniel 3:1-6]].

Apply it today: Think of one thing the world says you must bow to, like looking perfect or owning more, and name it honestly to God today.

What does 'even if He does not' mean? Did they doubt God?

They were not doubting. They said plainly that God was able to save them. What they did not claim was to know what He would choose. Their loyalty did not depend on getting the ending they wanted. They trusted God because of who He is, not because of what they could get from Him. That is a deep kind of faith. And the story shows they were not alone in the fire, as the king himself noticed in [[Daniel 3:24-25]].

Apply it today: Pray a short, honest prayer today telling God you trust Him with how a hard situation turns out.

Does this mean God will always rescue me from trouble?

No. The Bible shows that God sometimes rescues His people and sometimes does not. A hard season is never proof that someone has too little faith. Some of God's people in Scripture suffered greatly, as [[Hebrews 11:35-38]] describes. What this story does show is that God is able, that He is worth trusting either way, and that His people do not face the fire alone. When we do not know why something happened, it is honest to say so.

Apply it today: Tell a trusted friend about one thing you are walking through, and ask them to pray with you.
