“Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
In plain words: Paul says husbands should love their wives as much as they love themselves, and wives should respect their husbands. Love and respect help a home grow strong.
What Ephesians 5:33 means.
Paul sums it up: husbands, love your wives as yourselves, and wives, respect your husbands. Love and respect build a home.
Common questions about Ephesians 5:33
Why does it ask husbands to love and wives to respect? Isn't that unfair?
Paul isn't ranking one person above the other. Just before this, he tells all believers to put each other first out of respect for Christ (Ephesians 5:21). Then he speaks to each spouse about what they need to hear. Husbands are told to love the way Christ loved the church, giving himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25). That kind of love serves; it doesn't boss. Wives are asked to respect. Both are hard in their own way, and both need God's help. This is about marriage, not about men ruling over women.
Apply it today: Tell your spouse, or someone close to you, one specific thing you appreciate about them today.
I'm not married. Does this verse matter to me?
It can. The verse speaks to married people, and singleness is a full and good life. But the heart of it, love that puts others first and respect that treats people as valuable, fits every relationship. Romans 12:10 tells believers to love one another warmly and to honor each other. Every person is made in God's image (Genesis 1:27), so every person is worth respect.
Apply it today: Show honor to someone today by listening to them fully, without checking your phone.
What if my marriage is hard and I can't do this?
Nobody does this perfectly, so start small and start with grace. Love and respect grow when two people talk honestly, say sorry quickly, and ask Jesus for help. A counselor or a mature, trusted friend can help too. But this verse never means putting up with abuse. If someone is hurting, threatening or controlling you, your safety comes first. Tell someone you trust today, and if you are in danger, call your local emergency number.
