Common questions about Isaiah 61:3

Who is this promise for?

Isaiah wrote to God's people at a time of loss and heartbreak. Zion is another name for Jerusalem, the city that stood for God's people. The mourners are people who are grieving and worn down. Hundreds of years later, Jesus stood up in His hometown, read from this same part of Isaiah, and said it was coming true through Him [[Luke 4:16-21]]. So this is good news for anyone who is hurting, not only for people long ago. Jesus came to bring comfort and to heal what is broken.

Apply it today: Read Luke 4:16-21 and notice who Jesus says He came to help.

What do ashes, oil and a garment have to do with it?

In Bible times, grieving people sat in ashes or wore rough clothes to show their sorrow. Oil was used at celebrations and made faces shine. A garment of praise is like putting on party clothes instead of funeral clothes. So God is describing a trade. He takes the heavy things people carry and gives back beauty, joy and praise. The verse also says these people will be called oaks of righteousness. An oak is a strong tree with deep roots, and righteousness means being right with God. The picture is of lives made strong by Him.

Apply it today: Name one heavy thing you are carrying, and tell God about it in your own words.

Does this mean my sadness will disappear right away?

The verse does not say pain vanishes overnight, and it does not say sad people are doing something wrong. Jesus said that those who mourn are blessed, because they will be comforted [[Matthew 5:4]]. The Bible also says the LORD is close to the brokenhearted [[Psalm 34:18]]. Comfort often comes little by little, through God's Word, through people who love us, and through prayer. The Bible also says a day is coming when God will make all things new. Until then, you can bring your sorrow to Him honestly. He does not ask you to pretend.
