Common questions about Mark 11:24

Does this mean I get anything I want if I believe hard enough?

No. Jesus is not teaching a magic trick. Faith is not a power you build up inside yourself. It is trusting God, who is good and wise. Right before this verse, Jesus tells his friends to have faith in God, see [[Mark 11:22-24]]. The rest of the Bible adds that God answers prayers that line up with what He wants, see [[1 John 5:14-15]]. Even Jesus, on his hardest night, asked for something and then trusted the Father's plan, see [[Matthew 26:39]].

Apply it today: Ask God today for one real need, and tell Him you trust Him to do what is best.

What does it mean to believe that I have received it?

It means praying like someone who knows the One they are talking to. Think of asking a loving parent for help. You walk away calm because you know they heard you. It does not mean pretending something has happened when it has not, or saying the right words to make it work. It means trusting God's character. If your trust feels small, that is okay. A father once told Jesus he believed but needed help believing, and Jesus helped him, see [[Mark 9:24]]. God also invites us to come close without fear, see [[Hebrews 4:16]].

Apply it today: Read Mark 11:22-25 slowly, notice what Jesus says just before and after this verse, and then pray in your own words.

What if I prayed and nothing happened? Was my faith too small?

Not necessarily. A quiet or different answer is never proof that your faith failed. The apostle Paul begged God three times to take away a painful struggle. God did not remove it, but He promised Paul His strength, see [[2 Corinthians 12:7-9]]. God hears every prayer. Sometimes His answer is yes, sometimes wait, and sometimes something different from what we pictured. Jesus tells us to keep asking because our Father is good, see [[Luke 11:9-13]]. If you are hurting over an unanswered prayer, you are not alone.

Apply it today: Tell God honestly about one thing you are still waiting on, and ask Him to help you keep trusting Him.
