Common questions about Matthew 25:21

What story is Jesus telling here?

Jesus tells about a master who is leaving on a long trip. Before he goes, he gives his servants money to take care of, each one as much as he can handle. Two servants put the money to work, and the master is glad when he returns. One servant buries his and does nothing with it. This verse is the master's reply to the first servant. Jesus tells the story to show that He will return, and that what He trusts us with matters to Him. You can read the whole story in [[Matthew 25:14-30]].

Apply it today: Read Matthew 25:14-30 slowly today and notice which servant you feel most like.

Do I have to earn God's love by being good enough?

No. The Bible says we are saved by grace. That means a gift we could never earn, received by trusting Jesus [[Ephesians 2:8-9]]. This verse is about what comes after that gift. The servant already belonged to the master, and he was trusted with real things. He took good care of them. Faithful does not mean perfect. It means steady and trustworthy, even in small things. The master noticed his work and was glad. Our good work is a thank-you for what God has already given, not a payment for it.

Apply it today: Thank God today for His gift of grace, then do one small task with extra care as a way of saying thanks.

What does "enter into the joy of your master" mean?

The master is inviting his servant to share in his own happiness, like being welcomed in to a feast at his table. In the Bible, joy is more than a good mood. It is being close to God and glad in what He is doing. The psalm writer says the fullest joy is found in God's presence [[Psalm 16:11]]. So the best part of the reward is not more work. It is more of the master himself. Jesus said He came so we could have life to the full [[John 10:10]].

Apply it today: Spend five minutes today telling God what you are glad about, and ask Him to help you notice where He is already at work.
