“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
In plain words: Jesus says people who are grieving are deeply cared for, because comfort is coming to them.
What Matthew 5:4 means.
Jesus calls mourners blessed, not because grief is good, but because comfort is promised to them.
Common questions about Matthew 5:4
Why would Jesus call sad people blessed? Is He saying grief is good?
No. Jesus is not saying sadness is good. Death, loss and pain were never God's plan, and Jesus Himself wept at His friend's grave (John 11:35). The word blessed here means deeply cared for. Jesus is telling hurting people that they are not forgotten and that comfort is promised to them. Many voices say to hide your pain or hurry past it. Jesus says something different: your tears matter, and help is coming.
Apply it today: Name one thing you are sad about today instead of pushing it away.
How will mourners be comforted? What does that look like?
Comfort comes in more than one way. God draws near to people with broken hearts (Psalm 34:18). He also comforts us through other people who sit with us and care (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). And one day He will wipe away every tear and end death and pain for good (Revelation 21:4). So the promise is for today and for forever. Comfort does not always mean the sadness disappears quickly. It means we are not alone in it.
Apply it today: Reach out to one person you trust and tell them you could use some company.
What if I am hurting and I do not feel comforted?
Grief takes time, and there is no clock on it. Not feeling comforted yet does not mean something is wrong with you or your faith. The writers of the Psalms poured out their pain to God again and again, even asking why they felt so low (Psalm 42:5). Jesus' promise still stands. Be honest with God, and let someone walk beside you. If the pain feels too heavy to carry, a doctor or counselor can help too.
Apply it today: Tell God one honest sentence about how you feel right now.
Ask anything about it.
Every question gets a clear answer in seconds, and a way to live it today.
Live it today.
Reach out to someone who has walked through loss and let them sit with you. Don’t carry this alone.
Pray it back.
Jesus, You promised comfort to those who mourn. Comfort me today.
Carry it all day.
