Common questions about Proverbs 11:1

What are dishonest scales?

In Bible times, people bought grain, silver and food by weight. A seller set goods on one side of a scale and a stone on the other. A cheat kept two sets of stones: a heavy one for buying and a light one for selling. The buyer paid full price but got less than they paid for. God's law spoke against this in [[Leviticus 19:35-36]]. Today it can look like lying about hours worked, hiding a flaw in something you sell, or charging for work you never did. It means giving people less than you promised.

Apply it today: Think of one place where you give or take something, like time, work or money, and make sure it is truly fair.

Why would God care about something as small as a weight?

The word abomination means something God finds deeply wrong. He cares because cheating hurts real people, and often the ones with the least. Every person is made in God's image, so how we treat them matters to Him. The verse also says honest weights are His delight. That means God is not only against cheating. He is glad when we are fair. Small choices show what is in the heart, and honesty shows we trust Him to provide.

Apply it today: Pick one small, everyday moment today, like giving back extra change, and choose the honest way.

Does this verse matter if I don't run a business?

Yes. Everyone weighs something every day: time, effort, words, grades, taxes, promises. A worker, a student, a parent and a boss can all be fair or unfair. Jesus taught in [[Luke 16:10]] that a person who can be trusted with little can be trusted with much. Honesty does not earn God's love. That is a gift through Jesus. But living honestly is a good way to show we belong to Him, and it brings peace.

Apply it today: Ask yourself where you have bent the truth lately, and tell the truth about it to the person involved.
