Common questions about Proverbs 15:22

Who counts as a good adviser?

A good adviser is wise, honest and kind. They want what is best for you, not just what you hope to hear. Look for someone who tells the truth gently, has lived through something like what you face, and respects God's Word. The Bible says a wise person listens to advice, while a fool thinks his own way is always right. [[Proverbs 12:15]] The best adviser is not always the loudest voice or the most successful person in the room. Look for good character.

Apply it today: Write down the names of two people you trust to tell you the truth.

Do I have to do whatever my advisers say?

No. Advice helps you think, but it is not an order. The choice is still yours. That is why the verse says many advisers, not just one. When several wise people see the same thing, it is worth taking seriously. Check what you hear against the Bible, because Scripture has the final word. [[Proverbs 11:14]] says there is safety when many advisers are around. If advice asks you to lie, cheat or hurt someone, it is not wise, no matter who gives it.

Apply it today: Ask two different people the same question and compare their answers.

Why is asking for help so hard, and what if I don't know anyone wise?

Many people feel this way. Asking for help can feel like admitting you are weak. But nobody builds well alone, and wisdom grows when we listen. Start small with a trusted friend, a coworker you respect, or a group of believers. If you don't know anyone yet, the Bible says you can ask God for wisdom, and He gives it generously. [[James 1:5]] Often that wisdom comes through the people around you, so keep your eyes open and your questions honest.

Apply it today: Pick one plan you are working on and ask one trusted person today to point out its weak spots.
