Common questions about Proverbs 16:7

What does it mean to please the Lord?

It means living the way God says is good. Jesus said the heart of it is loving God and loving people (Matthew 22:37-39). In daily life, that looks like being honest, kind, fair and humble. It begins with trusting Jesus, who forgives us and helps us change. You don't earn God's love by being good. Ephesians 2:8-9 says we are saved by grace, which means a gift we don't deserve. Once we have that gift, we want to live in ways that make Him glad.

Apply it today: Choose one honest, kind thing to do today, like telling the truth when hiding it would be easier.

Does this mean every enemy will stop being against me?

Not always. Proverbs gives wise sayings about how life often goes. They are not promises that work like a machine. Jesus lived a perfect life, and some people still hated Him (John 15:18). So this verse doesn't say every enemy will become a friend. It does show that God is in charge, even over people who oppose us, and that honest, kind living often calms a fight. Romans 12:18 says to live at peace with everyone, as far as it depends on you. Our part is to aim for peace. The result is in God's hands.

Apply it today: Take one step toward peace today, such as saying a calm, kind word to someone you have argued with.

What should I do if someone is still unkind to me?

Jesus told His followers to love their enemies and pray for them (Matthew 5:44). That is hard, and it doesn't mean pretending nothing happened. Romans 12:17 says not to pay back evil with evil. You can stay honest, stay calm, and ask God for help. Peace also never means staying where you are being hurt or threatened. If you are not safe, move away and tell a trusted adult or the right authorities. Praying for someone who treats you badly is one way to bring the matter to God.

Apply it today: Pray for one person who is hard to get along with, and ask God to help you answer them kindly.
