Common questions about Proverbs 22:7

Does this mean borrowing money is a sin?

No. This verse describes how debt works. It does not say every loan is wrong. But the Bible does take debt seriously. Romans 13:8 says to owe no one anything except love, which means paying what you owe and paying it on time. Debt can get heavy fast, so it is wise to think before you sign. Ask yourself: Can I really pay this back? What will it cost me over time? Who will I answer to until it is done?

Apply it today: Before your next loan or credit purchase, ask yourself, Can I pay this back, and what will it cost me?

Why does it say a borrower is a slave?

Because debt gives someone else a claim on your life. When you owe, part of your paycheck, your time, and your choices already belong to the lender. You might stay in a job you dislike, or lose sleep when a payment is due. Proverbs 22:7 uses a strong picture on purpose, so we feel the weight. A slave answers to a master. A borrower answers to a lender. The verse wants us to see the cost before we take it on.

Apply it today: Notice one way a bill or loan is shaping your choices today, and write it down.

What if I am already in debt?

Then you are not alone, and this verse is not calling you a failure. Many good people carry debt. The Bible says God cares about the weight you carry. Psalm 55:22 invites you to hand your worries to the Lord, who holds you up. Hope also looks like small, steady steps: knowing exactly what you owe, paying on time, and asking a wise, trusted person to help you make a plan. One step at a time still moves you forward.

Apply it today: Write down what you owe and to whom, then talk to God about that list, using Psalm 55:22 as your guide.
