Common questions about Proverbs 27:23-24

I don't own any sheep or cows. What does this mean for me?

Back then, flocks and herds were sheep, goats and cattle. They were how a family ate, dressed and earned a living. So this verse is about whatever gives you your living today. That might be your job, your savings, your shop, your garden or your home. The point is simple: look at it often and know how it is really doing. Don't just hope things are fine. Wise people look closely at what they have been given and take good care of it.

Apply it today: Write down the one thing that provides for you most, like your job or your savings, and check how it is really doing this week.

Is this saying I should chase money?

No. The verse does not say money is bad, and it does not say to chase it. It says riches do not last forever, so care for what you have and don't guess. Jesus warned that life is not about having lots of things (Luke 12:15). Paul told the rich not to put their hope in money, but in God (1 Timothy 6:17). Money is a tool. It is good to look after, and a poor thing to build your life on.

Apply it today: Ask yourself honestly whether you are looking after your money well or building your hope on it, and talk to God about the answer.

What does it mean that a crown doesn't last for every generation?

A crown stands for power, like a king's. The writer says even a crown does not last through every generation. Families rise and fall, and nothing on earth stays the same forever. That is not meant to scare you. It is a reason to be wise today and to stay humble. It also points us to what does last. Jesus told us to store up treasure in heaven, where it cannot be lost (Matthew 6:19-21). Careful work matters, but God is the one who stays.

Apply it today: Thank God for one thing you have today, and ask Him to help you look after it wisely.
