Common questions about Psalm 138:8

What does purpose mean here?

A purpose is the reason something was made. David believed God had a plan for his life and would carry it through. The Bible says every person is made in God's image [[Genesis 1:27]]. It also says that people who trust Jesus were made for good things God prepared ahead of time [[Ephesians 2:10]]. So the big purpose is to know God, love Him, and love people. The smaller details of your path take prayer, wisdom, and good advice from people who know you. This verse does not give those details. It shows that God is faithful to finish His work.

Apply it today: Ask God in a short prayer to help you love one person well today.

Does this mean my life will be easy?

No. David wrote this while facing real trouble. Just before it, he says God keeps him alive even in the middle of hard times [[Psalm 138:7]]. The promise is not that nothing bad will happen. The promise is that God stays faithful and does not drop what He has made. Hard things do not prove that God has left you. They do not prove that your faith is weak, either. Many people in the Bible suffered and still trusted Him. God's love stays steady when life does not.

Apply it today: Name one hard thing you are facing and tell God about it, in your own words.

What does 'the works of Your hands' mean, and am I one?

Think of a craftsman who shapes something with his hands. The Bible says God made people with that kind of care. Another psalm says He put each person together before birth, and that we are made in amazing and wonderful ways [[Psalm 139:13-14]]. So yes, you are one of the works of His hands. David asks God not to abandon what He made. He asks because he trusts God's loving devotion, which means a loyal love that does not quit. God does not make people and then walk away.

Apply it today: Read Psalm 139:13-14 slowly and thank God for how He made you.
