Common questions about Romans 5:3-4

Why would anyone be glad about suffering?

Paul is not saying pain is good. He is not asking you to fake a smile. Just before this verse, he explains that people who trust Jesus have peace with God. That peace is the reason for the joy. Your hard time is real, but it is not the end of your story. The joy here is a deep gladness that God is with you and that He keeps His promises. You can cry and still have this joy. You can read how this passage begins in [[Romans 5:1-2]].

Apply it today: Tell Jesus honestly how a hard thing feels today, using your own words.

Does this mean God sends suffering to teach me a lesson?

No. This verse does not say every hard thing is a lesson from God. It does not say you did something wrong to deserve your pain. Sometimes we do not know why things happen, and it is honest to say so. What the verse says is that God can bring something good and strong out of hard times. Jesus knows suffering too. He told His friends they would have trouble in this world, and that He has overcome it. See [[John 16:33]].

Apply it today: Tell one person you trust about something hard you are facing right now.

What do perseverance, character and hope mean here?

Perseverance means not giving up, even when things move slowly. Character means the kind of person you are becoming: steady, honest and tested. Hope means a sure expectation that God will keep His promises. It is more than wishful thinking. Paul says this hope will not let you down, because God's love has been poured into the hearts of those who trust Him through the Holy Spirit. Read it in [[Romans 5:5]]. This kind of growth takes time, so you do not need to rush it.

Apply it today: Pick one small step that helps you keep going in something difficult, and take it today.
