“What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
In plain words: Since God is on our side, nothing can stand against us and win. When life feels scary, we can remember who is really in charge.
What Romans 8:31 means.
Paul asks: if God is for us, who can be against us? The question settles who’s really in charge.
Common questions about Romans 8:31
Who does the word 'us' mean?
Paul wrote this to people who trust Jesus. Just before it, he says there is no punishment waiting for those who belong to Christ [[Romans 8:1]]. So 'us' means God's family, the people who have put their trust in Jesus. And the door is open to everyone. Anyone can turn to Jesus and trust him. Being 'for us' means God stands with his children, forgives them, and does not walk away from them.
Apply it today: Read Romans 8:1-4 slowly today and notice what it says about people who belong to Jesus.
Does this mean nothing bad will ever happen to me?
No. Paul knew pain. He was beaten, jailed and hated for following Jesus. Right after this verse, he talks about trouble, hardship and danger [[Romans 8:35-39]]. So the promise is not an easy life. The promise is that nothing is stronger than God's love, and nothing can cut us off from it. People may work against you and hard days may come. But none of it can have the last word. God does.
Apply it today: Tell God about one worry in your own words today, even if it is just a sentence.
How can I know God is really for me?
Paul points to the cross. The very next verse says God did not hold back his own Son but gave him up for us [[Romans 8:32]]. If God gave the most precious thing he had, he is clearly on our side. You do not have to guess from how your week is going. Look at what Jesus did. That is where God showed how much he loves us.
Apply it today: Thank God today for sending Jesus, using simple words of your own.
Ask anything about it.
Every question gets a clear answer in seconds, and a way to live it today.
Live it today.
Name the thing that feels against you today, then ask Paul’s question over it.
Pray it back.
God, You are for me. Nothing that’s against me is bigger than You.
