Common questions about Titus 3:5

What does "saved" mean here?

Saved means rescued. The Bible says everyone has done wrong and fallen short of God's goodness [[Romans 3:23]]. That wrong, called sin, puts a gap between us and God. Jesus closed that gap. He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead. When we trust Him, God forgives us and welcomes us into life with Him that never ends. Paul says this comes from God's mercy. Mercy means kindness we did not earn and could not pay for. It is a rescue, not a reward.

Apply it today: Read Romans 3:23 slowly today and thank God that rescue comes from His mercy, not from your record.

If good deeds don't save me, do they matter at all?

Good deeds matter, but they cannot save us. No one can do enough good to wipe out their wrong. Saving is God's work, and we receive it by trusting Jesus [[Ephesians 2:8-9]]. Good deeds grow out of that rescue. Think of someone who is given a home and then wants to take care of it. Paul says the same later in Titus: people who trust God should be careful to do what is good [[Titus 3:8]]. We do good because we are loved, not to earn love.

Apply it today: Do one kind thing for someone today, not to earn anything, but as a thank-you for mercy.

What is the "washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit"?

Picture a bath. Water takes off dirt. In the same way, God cleans away our guilt and gives us a new start. "New birth" means a new life that begins on the inside. Jesus explained this to a man named Nicodemus [[John 3:3-7]]. The Holy Spirit is God Himself, and He comes to live in everyone who trusts Jesus. Over time He changes how we think and live. This is something God does in us. We do not do it ourselves.

Apply it today: Ask God in your own words to make you new on the inside, and keep reading about Jesus.
