Is yoga a sin for Christians?

Your gym offers yoga, your doctor recommended it for your back, and it seems harmless. But you’ve heard it might be spiritual. Is it okay?

The short answer

Stretching and exercise are not a sin. Yoga as a spiritual practice is. Yoga began as a Hindu spiritual discipline, and many of its practices are acts of worship: poses like the sun salutation honor a Hindu god, chanting “om” and mantras calls on spiritual powers, and its meditation aims to empty your mind and unite you with “the universe.” God says, “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3). In plain words: stretch your body all you want, but don’t take part in the spiritual side. Keep your mind fixed on the true God.

Daniel drew a line

Daniel was taken to Babylon as a teenager. He learned their language and their literature and served in their government. But when they offered him the king’s food, “Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself” (Daniel 1:8). He went along with what was neutral and drew a hard line at what would compromise his devotion to God. And God blessed him for it.

What to avoid

Chanting “om,” mantras or Sanskrit prayers. Meditation that tells you to empty your mind or connect with the universe or your “divine self.” Talk about chakras, energy and spirit guides. Classes that open or close with spiritual rituals.

What’s fine

Stretching, balance and strength exercises for your health. Physical training has value (1 Timothy 4:8). Pick a class that is clearly exercise only, or stretch at home with worship music or Scripture.

Christian meditation is different

Biblical meditation doesn’t empty your mind. It fills it with God’s Word: “his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2).

What the Bible says

  1. 01

    No other gods.

“You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,”

    Exodus 20:3–5
  2. 02

    Daniel drew a line.

“But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself.”

    Daniel 1:8
  3. 03

    Physical training.

“But reject irreverent, silly myths. Instead, train yourself for godliness. For physical exercise is of limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, holding promise for the present life and for the one to come.”

    1 Timothy 4:7–8
  4. 04

    Meditate on His Word.

“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night.”

    Psalm 1:1–2
  5. 05

    Not partners with demons.

“No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.”

    1 Corinthians 10:20–21
  6. 06

    Your body as an offering.

“Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

    Romans 12:1–2

Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible.

One thing to do today

If you stretch or do yoga, replace any chant or “clear your mind” moment with a verse. Start with Psalm 46:10.

Common questions

Is “Christian yoga” okay?

If it is truly just stretching with Scripture and prayer to Jesus, yes. If it keeps the Hindu spiritual parts with a Christian label, no.

Is Pilates the same as yoga?

No. Pilates was developed as physical exercise, without the spiritual roots.

Are the yoga poses themselves evil?

A stretch is a stretch. What matters is the meaning attached to it and what your heart is doing.
