Common questions about Ecclesiastes 9:10

What is Sheol, and why does the verse talk about it?

Sheol is the Hebrew word for the place of the dead, the grave. The writer of Ecclesiastes is looking at life from this side of death. He is saying your time to build, plan and learn on this earth is short, so it matters. This verse is not the whole Bible story about what comes after death. Jesus rose from the dead, and He promises new life to everyone who trusts Him (John 11:25).

Apply it today: Name one thing you have been putting off and do the first step of it today.

Does this mean I should work all the time?

No. Doing something with all your might means putting your real heart into what is in front of you. It does not mean running yourself empty. The same Bible tells us to rest. God set apart a day of rest in Exodus 20:8-10, and Jesus often stepped away to pray. Working well and resting well both honor God. Give your full effort to your job, your family and your friends, and then rest without guilt.

Apply it today: Choose a time today to stop working and truly rest, and give your full focus to your work before then.

Do I have to do my best to earn God's love?

No. God's love is not a paycheck for good work. Ephesians 2:8-9 says we are saved by grace, which means God's kindness that we did not earn, received by trusting Jesus. Our effort is an answer to that love, not a payment for it. Colossians 3:23 says to work as if you are working for the Lord, not just for people. When you know you are already loved, you can work with a glad heart instead of fear.

Apply it today: Do one small job today with care, as if you were doing it for the Lord.
