Common questions about Matthew 25:16

What is a talent?

A talent was a very large amount of money in Jesus' day, worth many years of a worker's pay. Today we use the word for skills, and that comes from this very story. In the parable, a master goes on a trip and trusts his servants with his money. The servant in this verse was given five talents. He knew the money was not really his, so he used it well and did not wait. You can read the whole story in Matthew 25:14-30.

Apply it today: Read Matthew 25:14-30 slowly today and notice what the master says to the servants who were faithful.

What is Jesus teaching with this story?

Jesus told this story to show how to live while we wait for Him to return. The master stands for Jesus. The money stands for what He puts in our hands: our time, our abilities, our money, and the people around us. The servant did not just guard what he was given. He put it to work. The point is not getting rich. It is being faithful with what we have been trusted with. In Matthew 25:21, the master welcomes faithful servants with joy.

Apply it today: Name one thing you have, like time, a skill, or a little money, and use it to help someone today.

Does this mean I have to earn God's love by working hard?

No. Look at the order of the story. The master gave first. The servants did not earn their place. They were trusted with something that was not theirs. In the same way, being right with God is a gift of His grace, received by trusting Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). Good work comes after that, as a way of living with Him. Notice too that the master gave each servant a different amount (Matthew 25:15). God does not ask you to be someone else. He asks you to be faithful with what is in your hands.

Apply it today: Thank God for one thing He has put in your hands, then use it for one person today.
