Common questions about Ephesians 6:4

What does it mean to provoke your children to anger?

To provoke means to push someone until they boil over. Paul is warning dads not to stir up anger in their kids. That can look like harsh words, unfair rules, nonstop criticism, or asking more than a child can give. Another letter of Paul says the same thing: [[Colossians 3:21]]. Kids who feel crushed can lose heart. This does not mean a parent never says no. It means correction comes with care, not with a short temper.

Apply it today: Pick one moment today to pause, take a breath, and answer a child in your life in a calm, kind voice.

What is the discipline and instruction of the Lord?

Discipline here means training, like a coach helping a player grow. It is not only punishment. Instruction means teaching. So Paul pictures a father who helps his children learn who Jesus is and how to live His way. Much of this happens in everyday life, at meals, in the car, at bedtime. Moses described the same idea long before: [[Deuteronomy 6:6-7]]. Kids also learn by watching, so a dad who says sorry and keeps his word teaches a lot.

Apply it today: Share one thing you have learned about Jesus with a child at dinner or bedtime tonight.

Is this only for fathers, and what if my own dad was harsh?

Paul wrote to fathers, and the call to them is clear. The same heart fits any parent, grandparent, or guardian who helps raise a child. If your own father was harsh, that was not your fault, and it does not have to repeat in your home. The Bible shows God as a Father who is patient and kind with His children: [[Psalm 103:13]]. You can learn from Him how to treat the people you love.

Apply it today: Write down one way you want to treat the children in your life and put it where you will see it.
