Common questions about Genesis 2:24

What does "one flesh" mean?

"One flesh" is a picture of two people joined so closely that they become one new family. It includes the body, but it is much more than that. It means sharing a home, a future, joys and troubles. Jesus pointed back to this verse in Matthew 19:4-6. He said God Himself joins a husband and wife together, so marriage is meant to last for life. The Bible describes marriage as a covenant, which is a serious promise, between one man and one woman.

Apply it today: Think of one way you can build closeness with someone you love today, such as a kind message or a shared meal.

Does "leave his father and mother" mean I should cut off my family?

No. It means a new first loyalty. When someone marries, their spouse becomes their closest partner, and the two of them become a new home. It does not mean they stop loving their parents. Exodus 20:12 still tells us to honor our father and mother, and that never ends. Think of it as a change in place, not a loss of love. Parents can still be cherished, thanked and listened to, while the husband and wife make their choices together.

Apply it today: Send a short thank-you to a parent or to someone who helped raise you.

What if I'm single, or my marriage is hard right now?

The Bible honors single life as a full and good life. Jesus never married, and Paul wrote about the gift of singleness in 1 Corinthians 7:7-8. If you are married and it feels hard, that does not mean you have failed. Oneness is something couples grow into over many years. Talking with wise friends or a counselor can help. If you are ever being hurt, threatened or controlled, your safety comes first, and you should reach out for help today.

Apply it today: Tell one trusted person how you are really doing and ask them to listen.
