Common questions about Hebrews 10:23

What does hope mean in this verse?

In daily life, hope often means a wish, like hoping it won't rain on your birthday. In the Bible, hope is much stronger. It is a sure expectation, because it rests on someone who keeps His word. The hope in this verse is that Jesus has made a way for our sins to be forgiven and for us to be close to God, and that He will return. Profess means to say out loud. So this is the hope we speak about when we tell others we trust Jesus. The verse says to hold it tightly, like holding a rope in a storm.

Apply it today: Say out loud, in your own words, one thing you are trusting God for today.

What did God promise, and why can I trust Him?

This letter was written to Christians who were under pressure and tempted to give up. Just before this verse, it reminds them what Jesus did. He gave His life so that sins can be forgiven and we can come near to God with a clean heart [[Hebrews 10:19-22]]. God has also promised to be with His people and to make all things new. The reason to trust Him is His character. Scripture says God is not a man who lies or changes His mind [[Numbers 23:19]]. The hope stands on His faithfulness, not on how strong we feel.

Apply it today: Read Hebrews 10:19-23 slowly today and notice one thing Jesus has already done for you.

What if my faith feels weak and I have doubts?

Holding on does not mean you must never struggle. Look at the reason the verse gives: God is faithful. Your hope rests on His strength, not on how tightly you grip. The very next verses say how to hold on together. We are not meant to do it alone [[Hebrews 10:24-25]]. Meeting with other believers, sharing honestly and encouraging one another keeps hope strong when it feels thin. Bring your questions to God in prayer and to people who love Him. Doubt can be a place to ask, not a reason to feel ashamed.

Apply it today: Tell one trusted person about something you are struggling to believe and ask them to pray with you.
