“So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
In plain words: Jesus told His friends they were sad now, but He would see them again. Then their hearts would be glad, and nobody could ever take that gladness away.
What John 16:22 means.
Jesus told His grieving disciples their sorrow would turn to joy, and that no one would take that joy away.
Common questions about John 16:22
What was Jesus talking about when He said this?
Jesus said this the night before He was arrested. He had told His friends He would die, and they were heartbroken. But He promised He would see them again. Three days later He rose from the dead and showed Himself to them. Read [[John 20:19-20]] to see how glad they were. Just before this verse, Jesus compared their pain to a mother in labor. It hurts, but joy comes after. Their worst day was not the end of the story.
Apply it today: Read John 20:19-20 slowly today and notice how the disciples' mood changes.
Does this mean I will never be sad again?
No. Jesus did not say hard times would never come. He said sorrow is part of life right now. Sadness is real, and Jesus does not ask you to hide it. But He promises that sorrow is not the last word. The Bible says that one day God will wipe away every tear and make all things new. Read [[Revelation 21:3-4]]. Until then, joy can live right beside sadness, because this joy rests on Jesus and not on how the day goes.
Apply it today: Tell Jesus in your own plain words about one thing that is making you sad today.
Is this promise for me too, or just for the first disciples?
Jesus spoke to His close friends first. But the Bible says people who trust Jesus today share in this hope, even though we have not seen Him with our eyes. Peter wrote about this joy in [[1 Peter 1:8-9]]. Because Jesus rose and is alive, no person, trouble, or loss can take away the joy that comes from knowing Him. Jesus never forces Himself on anyone. He invites you to trust Him, and when you do, this joy is for you.
Apply it today: Thank Jesus out loud for one good thing in your day, big or small.
Ask anything about it.
Every question gets a clear answer in seconds, and a way to live it today.
Live it today.
Thank God today for one way He has carried you through the loss so far.
Pray it back.
Jesus, turn my grief into joy in Your time, joy no one can take.
Carry it all day.
