Common questions about John 4:13-14

Who was the woman at the well, and why does this story matter?

She was a Samaritan woman who came to draw water at noon, when few people were around. In those days, Jews and Samaritans usually kept apart, and many people looked down on her. Jesus spoke to her anyway. He asked her for a drink, then offered her something far better. The story shows that Jesus welcomes people others walk past, and that no one is too far outside for Him to speak to. [[John 4:7-10]]

Apply it today: Read John 4:1-26 slowly today and notice one thing Jesus says or does that surprises you.

What does Jesus mean by water that stops you from ever being thirsty again?

Jesus is talking about more than a drink. Everyone gets thirsty for things like love, peace, and purpose, and we often try to fill that with money, people, or success. Those things can be good, but they do not last. Jesus says the life He gives is like a spring inside a person that keeps flowing. Later He connects this water to the Holy Spirit, whom God gives to those who trust in Jesus. [[John 7:37-39]]

Apply it today: Notice one thing you often turn to for comfort or joy, thank God for the good in it, and ask Him to be your true source.

How do I receive the water Jesus gives?

Jesus says to ask. Earlier in the story He tells the woman that if she knew who He was, she would ask Him, and He would give her living water. Asking means turning away from going your own way, which the Bible calls repenting. It also means trusting Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again. You do not have to clean yourself up first. Come as you are and speak plainly. [[John 4:10]]

Apply it today: Pray a short, honest prayer today telling Jesus you are thirsty for what only He can give.
