“Which of you, wishing to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has the resources to complete it?”
In plain words: Jesus says a wise person sits down before building a tower and figures out what it will take to finish it.
What Luke 14:28 means.
Jesus uses a builder’s wisdom: count the cost before you start. Faith doesn’t skip the numbers.
Common questions about Luke 14:28
Why is Jesus talking about building a tower?
Big crowds were following Jesus, and many were excited. He wanted them to know what following him really means, so he told a short story. A builder who skips the planning might run out of supplies halfway and leave a half-finished tower. Everyone would laugh. Jesus wants people to say yes to him with their eyes open, not just because everyone else is going along. He is not trying to scare anyone away. He is being honest, the way a good friend is. You can read the whole story in [[Luke 14:25-30]].
Apply it today: Think of one big thing you want to do and write down what it will really take.
What does it cost to follow Jesus?
Jesus is honest about it. Right after the tower story, he says that following him means letting go of anything we hold more tightly than him, even good things like plans and possessions [[Luke 14:33]]. Just before it, he talks about carrying a cross, which means choosing his way every day, even when it is hard [[Luke 14:27]]. But he is not asking us to lose out. He says he came so that we could have life to the full [[John 10:10]]. He is worth more than anything we might give up.
Apply it today: Pray a short prayer naming one thing you tend to put ahead of Jesus.
Do I need everything figured out before I say yes to Jesus?
No. Counting the cost means being honest about what following Jesus involves. It does not mean proving you are strong enough to never fail. Nobody follows Jesus perfectly. Salvation is God's gift of grace, and he gives his Spirit to help believers keep going. The Bible says the God who begins a good work in a person will carry it on to completion [[Philippians 1:6]]. So think carefully, ask your questions, and then take your next step. You do not have to see the whole road first.
Apply it today: Take one small step today, such as reading a short part of the Gospel of Luke, instead of waiting until you feel ready.
Ask anything about it.
Every question gets a clear answer in seconds, and a way to live it today.
Live it today.
Before your next business move, write down the real cost in money, time and energy. Count it, then build.
Pray it back.
Lord, give me the wisdom to count the cost and the courage to build.
Carry it all day.
