Common questions about Matthew 6:33

What does 'the kingdom of God' mean?

The kingdom of God means God's rule, His loving rule as King. Seeking it first means wanting Him to be in charge of your life, not just a helper on the side. His righteousness means His way of being right and good, and being made right with Him through Jesus. So Jesus is saying to make knowing God and living His way your top aim. When that comes first, everything else in life finds its right place.

Apply it today: Tell God in your own words that you want Him first in your life today.

Does this mean God will make me rich if I put Him first?

No. Look at what Jesus was talking about just before this verse: food, drink and clothes, the everyday needs [[Matthew 6:25-32]]. He says your Father knows you need them. That is a promise about His care, not a promise of wealth. It also does not mean a hard season shows you did something wrong. Many faithful people have gone through lack. What Jesus offers is a Father who sees you and is close, and a life where money is no longer the boss.

Apply it today: Write down one need you are worried about and tell your Father about it in plain words.

Does this mean I should stop working or planning?

No. Jesus is not telling anyone to sit back and do nothing. Elsewhere the Bible praises hard work and wise planning. Here He is talking about worry, the kind that eats at you and sits first in your heart. Seeking God first is about what comes first, not what you stop doing. You can still work, plan and pay what you owe, while asking Him for help and living the way He teaches. Then tomorrow's trouble can wait until tomorrow [[Matthew 6:34]].

Apply it today: Start your day with one quiet minute, asking God to lead you before you check your phone or your bills.
