“When Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”
In plain words: Jesus was amazed. He told the people with Him that he had not seen anyone in Israel trust Him this much.
What Matthew 8:10 means.
Jesus was amazed at a Roman officer’s faith, who believed Jesus only had to say the word.
Common questions about Matthew 8:10
Who was this Roman officer, and why does it matter?
He was a centurion, a Roman army officer in charge of about a hundred soldiers. Rome ruled over the Jewish people then, so he was an outsider, and to many he was an enemy. He came to Jesus because his servant was paralyzed and in terrible pain. You can read the whole story in [[Matthew 8:5-13]]. It matters because Jesus praised the man nobody expected. It shows that Jesus welcomes people from every background, and that trusting Him matters more than where you come from or what you have done.
Apply it today: Think of someone you may have written off, and pray something kind for them today.
What did the officer do that amazed Jesus?
He believed Jesus did not even need to come to his house. He told Jesus to just say the word, and his servant would be healed. He knew how authority works. As an officer, when he gave an order, people obeyed. He trusted that Jesus had that kind of authority over sickness. He did not ask for a show or a sign. He simply trusted what Jesus could say and do. That is what faith is: leaning your full weight on Jesus because you believe He is who He says He is.
Apply it today: Read Matthew 8:5-13 slowly once today and notice what the officer says to Jesus.
Does this mean Jesus will fix my problem if I believe hard enough?
No. Faith is not a trick that makes God do what we want. The officer's faith pointed to Jesus, not to himself. Jesus is the one with the power, and He cares about people who are hurting. The story also does not mean that pain or sickness comes from too little faith. Hard things happen to people who trust Jesus deeply. What we can do is bring our needs to Him honestly, as this man did, and trust Him with the answer. [[Matthew 8:13]] shows how Jesus responded to him.
Apply it today: Tell Jesus about one real need in plain words today, and trust Him with how He answers.
