Common questions about Proverbs 20:4

What does "plow in season" mean?

Plowing is breaking up hard ground so seeds can go in. It was the first job of the farming year. "In season" means at the right time. Farmers had a short window, and if they waited too long, it closed. The verse pictures a man who puts off the early, hard work and then expects a harvest anyway. But seeds that never got planted cannot grow. Good things often need effort at the right moment, long before we see any result.

Apply it today: Pick one task you have been putting off and spend ten minutes starting it today.

Does this mean people who are poor or struggling are lazy?

No. Proverbs does not say that. This verse is about one kind of person: someone who can work and keeps delaying it. The same book says poor people can lose what they need because of unfair treatment (Proverbs 13:23). Hard times also come to people who work very hard. Use this verse to look honestly at your own habits, not to judge someone else's life or to decide why they are hurting.

Apply it today: Ask yourself kindly which small job you keep delaying, and do the first step of it.

Does God want me to work all the time?

No. The Bible treats work as a good thing, and people were given work even in the garden (Genesis 2:15). But it also gives rest as a gift, with one day in seven set apart (Exodus 20:8-10). And your worth is never earned by effort. Salvation is by grace, which means God's undeserved kindness, received by trusting Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). This verse is about wise timing and honest effort, not about proving yourself.

Apply it today: Write down the one most important task for today, do it first, and plan a real break afterward.
