Common questions about Proverbs 3:27

Who are "the deserving"?

The phrase points to people who are owed something good, like a worker waiting for pay or a neighbor with a real need. The next verse, [[Proverbs 3:28]], talks about not telling a neighbor to come back tomorrow when you could help today. The Bible also says God showed us kindness before we earned any of it ([[Romans 5:8]]). So a good place to start is with the people right in front of you. Look for real need, and let kindness lead.

Apply it today: Think of one person near you with a real need, and write down one way you could help.

What if I don't have much to give?

The verse says "when it is within your power." That means you are asked to do what you can, not what you can't. Good comes in small sizes: a ride, a meal, a phone call, time to listen, a kind word. [[2 Corinthians 8:12]] says a gift is welcome based on what a person has, not on what they don't have. Look at what is in your hands today. That is enough to begin.

Apply it today: Pick one small thing you can do for someone today, like a call, a ride, or a meal.

Why does it matter to do it right now?

When we put kindness off, it often never happens. People get busy, and "later" slips away. But someone who is hurting may need help today. [[Proverbs 3:28]] warns against saying "come back tomorrow" when you can help now. [[James 2:15-16]] says kind words alone do not feed a hungry person. Real love shows up in action. That is why this verse says generosity has a "now."

Apply it today: Do the good thing you have been putting off before the day ends.
