Common questions about Deuteronomy 8:18

Does this mean God will make me rich if I believe in Him?

No. Moses spoke these words to God's people, Israel, just before they entered a new land. He was giving a warning, not a get-rich plan. He said the ability to earn comes from God, so they should never boast that they did it all alone. Scripture never promises that faith brings money, and many faithful people have lived with little. What the verse does say is that your strength, your skills and your chances to work are gifts. Read the warning just before it in [[Deuteronomy 8:17-18]].

Apply it today: Name one skill or strength you have, and take a moment to thank God for it.

What is a covenant, and who are the fathers in this verse?

A covenant is a serious promise between two sides, a bit like a wedding vow. God made one with Abraham and then with his family, the people of Israel. The fathers here are those early family leaders: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God promised to be their God and to bless all the nations of the earth through their family. Christians believe that promise reaches its goal in Jesus. So this verse is about God keeping His word, not about us earning anything. See [[Genesis 12:1-3]].

Apply it today: Read Genesis 12:1-3 today and notice what God promised to do.

Why does remembering where my success comes from matter?

Success can make us forget. Just before this verse, Moses warns that when people have full homes and plenty of food, their hearts can grow proud and they forget God. Saying I did this all by myself pushes Him out of the picture. Remembering where our gifts come from does the opposite. It makes us thankful and humble, and it makes us ready to share with others. It also keeps us close to the One who gave us life. Read [[Deuteronomy 8:11-14]].

Apply it today: Write down one good thing in your life that you did not earn, and thank God for it.
