2 Corinthians 9:6-7 · Meaning

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.”

2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-7 · BEREAN STANDARD BIBLE

In plain words: Think of a farmer planting seeds. A farmer who plants only a few seeds gets a small harvest, and one who plants many gets a big one. In the same way, each person should give what they have chosen in their own heart, gladly and not because they feel pushed, because God loves a person who gives with joy.

01Understand

What 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 means.

Common questions about 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Does this mean I will get rich if I give?

No. Paul was writing to Christians in Corinth about helping other believers who were in need. The farmer picture shows that a generous life bears real fruit. It is not a deal where you give so you can get more. A few verses later, in 2 Corinthians 9:8-11, Paul says God provides what we need so that we can keep being generous. The harvest he talks about is goodness in people's lives and thanks going up to God. God's love is not for sale.

Apply it today: Think of one person who needs help this week and write down one way you could be kind to them.

How much am I supposed to give?

This verse does not name an amount. It says each person should give what they have decided in their own heart. That means thinking it over and choosing with care, not guessing or reacting. Many Christians use a tenth as a starting point, but Scripture never makes it a rule you must meet. God cares more about why you give than how much. Giving that comes from gratitude is what He is pleased with.

Apply it today: Take a few quiet minutes to think about what you could gladly give, whether time, help or resources.

What if I don't feel cheerful about giving?

That is an honest feeling, and many people have it. The verse points away from regret and pressure. Being cheerful means giving because you want to, not because someone made you feel guilty. If you feel tight inside, stop and ask why. Sometimes it is worry, and sometimes it is pressure from others. Christians give because God gave first. In John 3:16, Jesus is the greatest gift ever given. A glad heart grows as we remember that.

Apply it today: Read John 3:16 slowly today and thank God for the gift He gave.
