“Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.”
In plain words: Calm down, my heart, and come back to a quiet place, because the Lord has taken good care of me.
What Psalm 116:7 means.
The psalmist tells his own soul to return to rest, because the Lord has been good to him.
Common questions about Psalm 116:7
What is a soul, and how do you tell it to rest?
Your soul is the deep inside part of you, where your thoughts, feelings and fears live. The writer of this psalm talks to his own soul, the way you might calm a scared friend. He does not just say "relax." He gives a reason: the Lord has been good to him. Earlier in the psalm he says the Lord listened when he cried out to Him ([[Psalm 116:1-2]]). Telling your soul to rest means reminding it of what God has already done.
Apply it today: Say out loud one calm sentence to your worried heart, such as "God has been good to me, and I can rest."
Why does it say "return" to rest?
"Return" means he had lost his rest and is now going back to it. The verses just before this show why. He had been in terrible trouble and was afraid he might die ([[Psalm 116:3-4]]). He called out to the Lord, and the Lord rescued him. Now he can come back to peace, like coming home after a storm. The verse tells us that peace is not something we must earn. It is a place we can go back to, because God has been kind.
Apply it today: Notice one thing that has been stealing your peace today, and quietly hand it over to God in a short prayer.
What if my life is still hard? Can I still rest?
Yes. The psalmist does not pretend everything is fine. He admits he was hurting and afraid ([[Psalm 116:10]]). His rest comes from trusting the Lord's goodness, not from having an easy life. Jesus says something similar. He invites tired and burdened people to come to Him and find rest ([[Matthew 11:28-30]]). Rest here does not mean the problems vanish. It means you do not carry them alone, because the One who has been good to you is still near.
Apply it today: Write down one good thing God has done for you, and read it again tonight before you sleep.
Ask anything about it.
Every question gets a clear answer in seconds, and a way to live it today.
Live it today.

Pray it back.
Lord, You’ve been good to me. My soul returns to its rest.
