Common questions about Zechariah 4:10

What are the "small things" this verse talks about?

God's people had come home to Jerusalem after many years as captives in Babylon. A leader named Zerubbabel was helping them rebuild God's house, the temple. The first work looked tiny and weak next to the grand temple built long before by King Solomon (Haggai 2:3). Some people were discouraged. This verse says not to look down on that humble start. Earlier in the same chapter, the message is that the work would be done by God's Spirit, not by human strength (Zechariah 4:6). A small start is not a wasted start.

Apply it today: Take one small step today on something good you have been putting off.

What is a plumb line, and why is it in this verse?

A plumb line is a string with a small weight on the end. Builders hang it beside a wall to see if the wall is perfectly straight. In this verse, it is in Zerubbabel's hand. That shows the building was moving forward, and being done with care. Just before this, Zechariah 4:9 says Zerubbabel's hands laid the foundation and his hands would finish the work. God is glad to see work that is steady, honest and headed toward the finish, even when it is still unfinished.

Apply it today: Look at one thing you are working on today and ask whether it is honest, steady and going the right way.

What does it mean that the seven eyes of the LORD scan the whole earth?

In the Bible, the number seven often points to something complete. So the picture is of God seeing everything, with nothing missed, anywhere on earth. This is not a camera waiting to catch someone doing wrong. In this verse His eyes rejoice as they watch the work being done. Jesus also taught that the Father notices even the small sparrows, and that people matter far more to Him than they do (Matthew 10:29-31). Nothing small in your life is out of His sight.

Apply it today: Thank God out loud, or write down, one small good thing in your life today.
